about

During the summer of 2013 we recorded 'Kæm va du?' whenever we had time inbetween the concerts. For the first time in my life I found myself using other people's works and making my own versions of them.

'Kæm va du?' is an album about my island, Senja, one of the largest islands in Northern Norway. In tourist brochures they tend to call it The Fairytale Island. Others call her The Treacherous Lady, owing to the unpredictable weather. I read somewhere that the name Senja possibly comes from old Dutch and means ‘the torn-to-pieces’. I think it is a suitable name. With its deeps fjords and steep mountains, it has never been easy to travel around on Senja. Its landmass and its people are indeed torn apart.

Times are changing though, even on Senja. When my grandparents moved here thirty years ago, there was no road. Most people were self-supporting fishermen and farmers. In only a few decades things have changed completely. I grew up with television and the Internet in my living room just like any other kid in this country. When I was 15, I moved away from home in order to continue my education like everybody else. Now the roads have reached most of the villages on the island, at least those that haven’t been deserted. Senja is shrinking, and changing a little with every day.

On 'Kæm va du?' I have borrowed most of the words from other people’s pens. It is a dive into Senja as I believe it used to be. A small something to remember. Things are changing so rapidly now, we might need to hold on to who we once were in order to understand who we are.
